Helping Hands of Rockwall County is celebrating its 50th anniversary while reporting increased demand for food and emergency financial assistance.
The nonprofit says food pantry visits have risen 33% over the prior year and the pounds of food distributed have increased 40%, according to an Oct. 29 sponsored article published by Blue Ribbon News in collaboration with Helping Hands. The announcement does not specify the exact comparison periods for those increases.
By Aug. 31, pantry visits had already matched the total for all of 2024, the organization said.
Founded in 1976, Helping Hands provides food, emergency financial aid and affordable healthcare to Rockwall County residents. It reported serving 31,783 clients in 2024, 35,024 in 2025 and 28,785 through August 2026. The announcement does not explain whether those totals represent unique individuals.
Emergency financial assistance reached 1,411 households through August, totaling $482,000. The nonprofit said 32% of financial assistance went toward shelter costs. In 2025, it provided financial aid to 1,976 households.
The growing demand comes as Rockwall County’s population expands. The county reached an estimated 140,738 residents in July 2025, up 30.5% from its April 2020 population base, according to the U.S. Census Bureau.
Helping Hands also operates a health center offering sliding-scale and cash-pay options for uninsured and underinsured residents. Services include preventive care, chronic disease management and wellness visits.
A North Texas Food Bank grant helped the pantry add a walk-in freezer and supplies, according to a November 2025 announcement. President and CEO Jon Bailey said the equipment expanded the organization’s capacity to store perishable food.
