The Rockwall County Learning Gardens got its first plants in the ground Wednesday, Oct. 28, during a morning ceremony at 1111 E. Yellowjacket Lane.

Local leaders, county officials and more than 70 certified volunteers from the Rockwall County Master Gardeners gathered at 10 a.m. between the Rockwall County Courthouse and the Rockwall County Library for the inaugural planting, according to a county announcement.

Todd Williams, Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Agent for Rockwall County, said the gardens reflect a shared commitment to hands-on, science-based education for residents. "We look forward to planting these first seeds today and watching this space grow into a lasting community resource," Williams said, according to the county. The county said the completed garden will also advance research-based horticulture and landscaping practices.

A formal dedication ceremony is planned for next year, once the initial plantings are in full bloom.

Coming up at the courthouse

The Rockwall County Veterans Memorial Foundation will dedicate its new Veterans Memorial Brick Garden on Nov. 11 at the courthouse, as reported by the Royse City Herald-Banner. That ceremony is scheduled for Liberty Hall.
