Rockwall drivers heading east on I-30 will lose their usual Horizon Road exit starting Friday, Oct. 30.

The Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) plans to close the eastbound off-ramp at Exit 67A, weather permitting, and keep it shut through early 2027, according to a traffic alert posted by Rockwall County. The closure will let crews construct and relocate the exit and entrance ramps serving the Horizon Road area along I-30.

TxDOT has not announced a specific time of day for the closure.

What drivers should do

Eastbound I-30 travelers should follow detour signs and use Exit 67B to reach Horizon Road. Daily lane-closure updates are available at DriveTexas.org, and TxDOT said it will announce major scheduled closures in advance. Drivers can also sign up for text alerts through the site.

Part of a bigger project

The ramp work falls under TxDOT's $348 million I-30 corridor expansion, which will widen the interstate from four to six main lanes and add continuous frontage roads from State Highway 205 to the Hunt County line. The project also includes new frontage road bridges across Lake Ray Hubbard.

Williams Brothers Construction Co. is the contractor, and TxDOT Project Engineer Cody Jolley is overseeing the work, according to the October 2026 consortium report from Rockwall County. Construction began Sept. 22, 2023.

The Rockwall County Herald-Banner reported the ramp closure is part of TxDOT's Texas Clear Lanes initiative, which aims to reduce congestion in major metropolitan areas.

The overall I-30 expansion is expected to wrap up by early 2028, according to TxDOT's public alert. The consortium report lists an anticipated completion date of June 30, 2028.

Recent Horizon Road work

The Horizon Road bridge over I-30 has already seen disruptions. The bridge closed in both directions the weekend of Oct. 16 so crews could build temporary connections to new lanes, according to the Herald-Banner. Once finished, the bridge is expected to carry three lanes in each direction, two U-turn lanes and sidewalks on both sides.
