Scare on the Square returns to downtown Rockwall's San Jacinto Plaza on Saturday, Oct. 24, with free trick-or-treating, a pet parade and a pumpkin decorating contest.

The annual Halloween celebration runs from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m., according to the city of Rockwall's Main Street page. Families can collect candy at vendor-hosted "Boo Booths" while kids burn off their sugar on bounce houses and a hay maze.

Vendor booth signups are already full, the city's event page shows. That means a packed row of booths for trick-or-treaters to visit.

Pumpkin decorating contest

Decorated pumpkin entries will be accepted from 2 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. at San Jacinto Plaza. The public votes on favorites from 2:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m., and the top three pumpkins receive awards at 4:30 p.m.

The window is tight. Contestants who arrive after 2:30 p.m. will miss the entry cutoff. Online pre-registration is available through a Google Form linked on the city's event page, along with a downloadable rules sheet.

Pet costume parade

Pet owners can dress their animals in Halloween costumes and register on-site from 2 p.m. to 3:45 p.m. The parade steps off at 4 p.m. Online signups are also available through the city's event page.

The Rockwall County Herald-Banner also covered the event details, noting the afternoon is free and open to all ages.

Admission is free. No tickets are required.
