The Horizon Road Bridge will close to all traffic in both directions starting Friday, Oct. 16, at 10 p.m. and will not reopen until Monday, Oct. 19, at 5 a.m.

A Rockwall County traffic alert published Tuesday, Oct. 13, announced the shutdown on behalf of the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT). Crews will use the weekend to build temporary connections to new lanes on the bridge.

The closure depends on weather. If work stays on schedule, the bridge will reopen Monday morning with additional lanes open to drivers.

No specific detour routes were listed in the alert. TxDOT directed drivers to check DriveTexas.org for the latest closure updates and alternate routes throughout the weekend.

What's behind the closure

The Horizon Road Bridge work is part of TxDOT's I-30 corridor expansion from SH 205 to the Hunt County line, a $348 million project expected to wrap up by early 2028, according to The Rockwall Times.

The bridge itself is being rebuilt in stages. TxDOT's plan calls for constructing a new half of the bridge, then tearing down and replacing the existing side, according to a City of Rockwall newsletter from October 2024. The finished bridge will carry three lanes in each direction, two U-turn lanes and sidewalks on both sides.

As of October 2025, traffic had already shifted to the new eastside lanes while construction continued on the west side, the city reported in its October 2025 newsletter. Speed limits on all I-30 frontage roads within Rockwall city limits were reduced to 35 mph during construction.

The Horizon Road interchange was scheduled to be completed in late 2026, according to city newsletters from 2024.
