Rockwall ISD families considering dual credit courses for the 2027-28 school year can attend an upcoming information night at the Dr. Gene Burton College & Career Academy.

The district announced the session on Oct. 26, inviting parents and students who will be new to the dual credit program. The event will cover program details, expectations and the enrollment process. A specific date, time and location had not been listed on the district's posting as of Oct. 27.

The academy, at 2301 S. John King in Rockwall, partners with Collin College to offer both core academic courses and career and technical education dual credit tracks.

What families should know

Students entering dual credit must score at the college-ready level on the Texas Success Initiative Assessment (TSIA), a state placement test in reading, writing and math, or provide an approved exemption. High school students in Texas cannot take developmental courses, according to the academy's TSIA page, so meeting that threshold is required. The test is untimed, and scores are valid for five years.

Under the academy's current course listings, which reflect a 2023-2026 partnership agreement with Collin College, juniors are limited to English Composition I and II and U.S. History I and II. Students who complete those prerequisites can access additional courses in subjects such as College Algebra, Statistics, Macroeconomics, Federal Government and World Literature.

The academy also lists four CTE dual credit programs through Collin College: Health Science, Automotive Technician, Welding and HVAC. The automotive, welding and HVAC tracks are taught at Collin College's technical campus in Allen, with transportation provided. Those programs require a two-year sequence that should start in a student's junior year.

Whether course offerings and pricing will change for 2027-28 has not been announced. The information night is expected to address those details.

Yasamyne Korban, CTE counselor and core dual credit contact at the academy, can be reached at 469-698-7418. The academy's main line is 469-698-0660.
