Sophia Brewster did something no other student in FCCLA history has done: earn the Silver National Champion designation in Fashion Construction three years running.

The Rockwall High School senior placed second in the nation in Fashion Construction Level 3 at the FCCLA National Leadership Conference in Washington, D.C., claiming the title for a third consecutive year. All six competitors from the Dr. Gene Burton College & Career Academy earned Gold Medals of Distinction, with every student scoring 92 or above against more than 60 competitors nationally in their respective categories.

The district announced the results on Wednesday, Aug. 19.

She wasn't alone at the top.

Sophia Suther, a Rockwall High sophomore, also earned Silver National Champion status, placing second nationally in Fashion Construction Level 2. Breanna Weaver, a Rockwall-Heath High School sophomore, finished in the top 10 in the same category.

In Fashion Design Level 2, three students placed in the top 10: Rockwall High senior Raleigh McMillan, who competed at nationals for the third consecutive year; Rockwall-Heath sophomore Analeigh Porter; and Rockwall High student Kenedy Card, a two-time national top-10 finisher.

All six are part of the FCCLA Fashion Design program at the Gene Burton Academy, coached by instructor Renee Aube.

"This fabulous award winning group is no doubt one of the most exceptional, dedicated, explosive and talented National competition teams that I have ever known and coached," Aube said.

The competition requires students to draft and design a custom garment, prepare a 40-page portfolio, deliver a 15-minute oral presentation and create a theme-based mood board.

The team's national run followed a record-setting performance at the Texas State Leadership Conference in Dallas in April, where the program sent six national qualifiers for the first time, surpassing its previous best of five. Ten of 12 students placed in the top five at state.
