Drivers who use FM 548 in Rockwall County will lose the road entirely overnight starting Sunday, Aug. 30, as crews begin demolishing the westbound I-30 bridge at that intersection.

The full closure of FM 548 northbound and southbound runs nightly from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. through Friday, Sept. 4, according to a Rockwall County traffic alert posted Friday, Aug. 28. The nightly shutdowns will continue beyond that week until the bridge work is complete, Blue Ribbon News reported.

All closures pause for Labor Day weekend. No lanes or roads will be shut down from 5 a.m. Friday, Sept. 4, through 10 p.m. Monday, Sept. 7, the county alert stated.

I-30 overnight closures

The same Sunday-through-Friday window brings a string of overnight I-30 lane closures between 9 p.m. and 5 a.m.:

  • I-30 eastbound, Erby Campbell Boulevard to FM 35: alternating lanes closed for installation of cast-in-place safety barriers.
  • I-30 westbound, FM 35 to Erby Campbell Boulevard: alternating lanes and the exit ramp closed as needed for barrier installation, rail removal and temporary pavement markings.

Starting Monday, Aug. 31, through Friday, Sept. 4, additional overnight work includes:

  • I-30 eastbound left lane, TL Townsend to FM 3549: closed for removal and placement of reinforced concrete pavement.
  • I-30 westbound left lane, FM 3549 to TL Townsend: closed for the same concrete pavement work.
  • I-30 eastbound right lane and Exit 71, FM 3549 to Ben Payne Road: closed for concrete safety barrier installation.

Daytime frontage road work

Commuters will also hit slowdowns on the I-30 frontage roads during the day. Flagging operations run from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday, Aug. 31, through Thursday, Sept. 3, between FM 551 and FM 2642 in both directions. Crews are installing concrete safety barriers and placing riprap along that stretch.

Emergency access and project scope

Contractor crews will coordinate with EMS, fire and police to allow emergency vehicles through closures, the county alert stated.

The work is part of the Texas Department of Transportation's (TxDOT) $348 million I-30 corridor expansion, which will widen the interstate and add continuous frontage roads from SH 205 to the Hunt County line. TxDOT expects the project to wrap up by early 2028.
