An 8-year-old boy was airlifted to a Dallas hospital Saturday, Sept. 5, with serious injuries. His grandfather's vehicle struck and ran over him in a Rockwall County driveway, the Rockwall County Sheriff's Office said.

Deputies responded at about 1:45 p.m. to the 1000 block of Smith Acres Drive, WFAA reported. The grandfather had been using a car in the driveway when the boy was struck, deputies were told upon arrival.

The boy suffered serious injuries to his midsection, the sheriff's office said.

A Care-Flite helicopter transported the boy to Children's Medical Center Dallas for treatment. The Fate Fire Department assisted with the helicopter request. Care-Flite is a nonprofit air and ground ambulance service that operates across North Texas, including Rockwall County.

The sheriff's office has not identified the boy or the grandfather. Child Protective Services has been notified of the incident.

No charges have been announced. The sheriff's office said the investigation is ongoing.

The boy's condition at Children's Medical Center Dallas has not been publicly updated since the airlift. The sheriff's office has not said whether it is investigating the incident as a crime or an accident, and no timeline for completing the investigation has been released.
