The Rockwall Art League has a basket weaving workshop and a juried fine art show with $6,600 in cash prizes lined up for October.

The nonprofit's "Art of Basketry" workshop runs 1 to 4 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 8, at the Harry Myers Community Center, 807 E. Washington St. in Rockwall. Local artist and certified art therapist Julie Woodard will lead the three-hour session, which is open to beginners, Blue Ribbon News reported.

Participants will explore the history of basket weaving, examine samples of different shapes and finishes, and practice techniques for starting, building and shaping a handwoven bowl basket.

Woodard's background spans 20 years in geriatric health care and 25 years in education. She works largely in mixed media and fiber arts, including quilting and needle arts.

"Basket weaving is a simple skill that artisans have used for millennia," Woodard said. "I'm happy to share this timeless skill and artform with anyone who wants to give it a try."

The workshop costs $40 plus a $1 service fee, which covers all supplies and snacks. No experience is required. Both league members and nonmembers can register at rockwallartleague.org.

One week later, the league's 26th Annual Juried Fine Art Show & Sale opens Friday, Oct. 16, and runs through Sunday, Oct. 18, at The Center at Rockwall City Place. The competition draws artists 18 and older from Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Louisiana and New Mexico, according to the Rockwall Herald-Banner.

Judges will award prizes across eight categories: oil, watercolor, acrylic, mixed media, mosaic, drawing, photography and sculpture. The top honor, Best in Show, carries a $1,000 cash award. Selected artwork will be on display and available for purchase during the three-day show.
