A Rockwall County campaign is raising money to bring free cancer screenings, diabetes tests and cholesterol checks directly to residents through a mobile health unit.

Live Well Rockwall, a volunteer-led initiative benefiting Texas Health's Wellness for Life Mobile Health Program, is collecting donations through North Texas Giving Day, which closes Thursday, Sept. 17. All funds stay in Rockwall County to support the mobile health unit's preventive services.

The campaign's 2026 Patient Champion is Shelly Springer Spearman, a breast cancer survivor whose cancer was discovered through a routine screening. After early diagnosis and treatment, Spearman now advocates for preventive care and community access to screenings, according to Blue Ribbon News.

The Wellness for Life Mobile Health Unit offers mammograms, cervical cancer screenings, Pap smears, colon and prostate cancer screenings, diabetes screenings and cholesterol testing. The unit parks in local neighborhoods so residents can get checked before symptoms develop.

Residents can see the mobile unit in person at two upcoming open-house tours at Rockwall Helping Hands, 950 Williams St. The first is Friday, Oct. 2, at noon. The second is Friday, Nov. 6, at noon. RSVPs go to Julie Heckmann at [email protected].

North Texas Giving Day is the largest regional giving event in the country, according to the Dallas Morning News. The 18th annual campaign is organized by Communities Foundation of Texas. In 2025, more than 94,000 donors gave $74.2 million to more than 3,500 nonprofits through the platform, the Royse City Herald Banner reported. The foundation covers all transaction fees, so 100 percent of each donation goes to the nonprofit.

Donors can search for Live Well Rockwall on the North Texas Giving Day website through Sept. 17. The broader campaign accepts contributions through Dec. 31.

Several Rockwall County nonprofits participating in North Texas Giving Day will gather at the Rock the Block event at The Harbor on Thursday, Sept. 17, from 5 to 7:30 p.m.
