Rockwall-Heath piled up 599 yards of offense and beat Tyler Legacy 63-35 on Saturday, Sept. 19, at Rose Stadium in Tyler.
The District 10-6A opener was a statement for the Hawks (2-2, 1-0). After a non-district schedule that included a 45-20 loss to Denton Guyer, a 49-46 win over Highland Park and a 46-44 loss to Trophy Club Byron Nelson, Heath's offense put together its most complete performance of the season.
Five Hawks scored touchdowns.
Quarterback Prosper Neal completed 14 of 16 passes for 293 yards and three touchdowns, according to the Herald-Banner. He also scored on a rushing touchdown. Neal's 87.5% completion rate drove a passing game that accounted for nearly half of the Hawks' 599 yards.
Carter Zahm carried 20 times for 212 yards and two rushing touchdowns, then added three catches for 67 yards and a receiving score. His 279 all-purpose yards paced the offense.
Aprince Hobbs contributed three receptions for 94 yards and a receiving touchdown along with a rushing score. Londell Hayden added two rushing touchdowns, and Christian Contreras caught a touchdown pass as Heath spread the scoring across the roster.
The Hawks built a 42-21 halftime lead and stretched the margin to 56-21 in the third quarter, according to MaxPreps. The two teams combined for 900 yards and 98 points. Heath finished with 306 rushing yards and 293 passing yards.
After the Hawks' first win of the season, a 49-46 thriller over Highland Park on Sept. 5, Zahm credited the team's seniors. "This truly is a team effort … Football is a team effort and I believe that," Zahm told the Herald-Banner after that Highland Park game. "With all the seniors we have coming together, our confidence is just gonna build and we're gonna have a great season."
First-year head coach Casey Dick, who came to Heath after leading Fayetteville, Arkansas, to a state championship, now has his team 1-0 in a district race that also features Rockwall, North Forney and Longview as leading contenders, per a Herald-Banner preview.
Tyler Legacy (1-3, 0-1) travels to Mesquite Horn in its next district game. The Hawks host Forney, which rallied from a two-score third-quarter deficit to beat Royse City 30-27 in its own district opener and enters at 1-3 overall and 1-0 in district play.
