Republican Don Huffines is seeking election as Texas comptroller of public accounts in the Nov. 3, 2026, election. He is the incumbent: Gov. Greg Abbott appointed him, and he was sworn in Aug. 1, 2026, according to the comptroller’s office.

The certified candidate list also includes Democrat Sarah Eckhardt, Libertarian V. Alonzo Echavarria-Garza and Green Party candidate Shehla Faizi.

Background

The office describes Huffines as a former state senator and businessman. His appointment preceded the election; a vote for him would keep him in office for the next elected term.

Taxes and oversight

In announcing his swearing-in, Huffines pledged to identify wasteful spending, protect tax dollars and pursue property-tax relief. He also said he would refuse his state salary.

Those goals do not establish a specific amount of savings or a guaranteed reduction in any household’s bill. The announcement reviewed does not supply a complete implementation budget or a replacement-funding formula for tax reductions.

The comptroller’s responsibilities

The comptroller oversees the state treasury, collects state taxes and certifies revenue available for the budget. The office also administers programs including education savings accounts, unclaimed property and other state initiatives.

For local residents and businesses, those duties affect tax administration, state finances and access to programs the office manages. The comptroller’s role is distinct from the Legislature’s authority to enact tax and spending laws and from local governments’ responsibility for their own property-tax rates.

The Rockwall Herald did not receive a direct questionnaire response from the candidate and does not endorse candidates.
